Unit Overview:

This chapter introduces students to integers and lays the groundwork for understanding how positive and negative numbers function in the real world and in math operations. The lessons are scaffolded to support diverse learners.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Integers

Students learn what integers are and explore how they appear in real-world contexts such as temperature, elevation, and money.

Lesson 2: Comparing and Ordering Integers

This lesson builds on number sense by teaching students to compare integers using inequality symbols and place them in order using number lines. Absolute value is introduced as a tool to measure distance from zero.

Lesson 3: Adding Integers with the Same Sign

Students learn how to add integers that are either both positive or both negative.

Lesson 4: Adding Integers with Different Signs

Students explore how to add integers with opposite signs, using absolute value to compare quantities and determine the sign of the answer.

Lesson 5: Subtracting Integers

This lesson introduces subtraction as the addition of the opposite, helping students understand integer subtraction through number line models and real-world problems.

Lesson 6: Mixed Operations / Order of Operations

Students apply all integer operation rules in multi-step expressions. The lesson emphasizes the correct order of operations (PEMDAS) and provides practice solving expressions that involve parentheses, negative numbers, and multiple operations.

Review Day

The review session includes mixed-practice problems from all six lessons and reinforces the key skills and vocabulary covered in the unit. This day is structured to provide additional support and re-teaching.

Unit Assessment

The chapter concludes with a 30-question assessment divided into six sections, each aligned with one lesson. The assessment features multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions, with a balance of conceptual understanding and computation.
